For this year, we are following the theme of the art program Currents: currents that keep nature and societies constantly in motion. Powerful or babbling, colliding or in harmony.

High and low tides, caused by the moon and the sun, show how rhythms and opposites keep each other in balance. Around the world, tides shape not only the landscape but also the lives and stories of people. They bring fertility and hope, but also threats, especially for communities that are dependent on the sea but are also vulnerable to its whims.

Modern humans often lack the awareness of the necessary rhythm between two elements that need each other and keep each other in balance. We tend to focus on 'more', 'bigger', 'stronger' and see endless growth as the ultimate goal. But this pursuit of constant growth can lead to self-destruction. Currents invites us to pause and reflect on this dynamic: not just the extremes, but the area in between, where differences meet and new possibilities arise.

The first four artists are also known for this. Paul Verheul, Elsemarijn Bruys, Studio Wantij and Sander Hagelaar each interpret the theme in their unique way. Their work invites stillness, wonder, or reflection, and makes palpable how forces within and around us are continuously in motion. More creators will follow soon.
