Sander Hagelaar
Lucien - day & night
In Lucien, water, electricity, and light come together in an installation that plays with what you think you understand. Water transports motion, light reveals that motion, electricity pulses in between. This combination creates the impression of something alive and elusive - a rhythm that takes place just beyond our reach.
Sander Hagelaar is fascinated by perception: how we perceive the world and how that perception shifts when the recognizable behaves differently than expected. Sander holds onto this confusion through the use of rhythm and movement. This creates a state in which your attention is not distracted, but rather deepened.
In Lucien, Sander seeks the balance between recognition and alienation. He shows the forces behind matter, without fully explaining them. In the seemingly self-evident reality, his work creates space for doubt. A subtle disturbance - a moment in which you come to the forefront again.
About Sander Hagelaar
Sander Hagelaar (1991, NL) is an artist with a fascination for the materials and movements of nature. His work focuses on perception: on the shift that occurs when the recognizable becomes unrecognizable. With his works, he creates frameworks in which natural processes can unfold – unpredictable, free, and alive. His installations and objects are interactive and experimental, employing physical principles such as light, gravity, air, or chemical reactions. Sander explores the power of chance and unexpected changes, and seeks in those moments of alienation and stillness a universal, sensory experience that fully brings people into the here and now.
The art program is made possible with support from Mondriaan Fonds and De Versterking.
