Cocky Eek and Schweigman & in collaboration with Machinefabriek
Beacon Marrum/Vlieland: CURVE
In collaboration with Hi-Lo and Het Lage Noorden, we present Baken Marrum/Vlieland: CURVE. It is a revival of this classic among the 'walk-in' sculptures, which was created in 2015. Curve is a dizzying tunnel; the visitor enters the work on foot and alone, undergoing a journey without visual references. With each step, the outside world drifts further away.
With this work, artist Cocky Eek and theater maker Boukje Schweigman create a disorienting journey, where light, material, sound, and architectural form merge; a total experience in a magical and estranging world. Sound artist Machinefabriek creates a new, mesmerizing soundscape for this work that guides the visitor during the journey.
Beacon Marrum/Vlieland: CURVE is the second Beacon of Hi-Lo that has a place in the art program of ITGWO, after Beacon Vlieland: SIN▲TθPIUM by Heleen Blanken in 2023. The work will first be accessible, starting from June 21, at Het Lage Noorden, and will move to Vlieland for the finissage, where it will be visible during the festival weekend from August 29 to September 1.
Het Lage Noorden has quickly developed into an important residency and art platform in the North. With this project, we are laying the foundation for a sustainable collaboration in the near future.
About Cocky Eek
Cocky Eek is a visual artist and designer. She creates spatial installations in which the visitor does not so much move through the space, but above all becomes part of a moving space. Her favorite materials are wind and air, with which she creates spatial compositions, flying experiments, and voluminous liquid forms. Cocky regularly collaborates with Schweigman&. She designed the inflatable structure of Blaas in 2013 and did the scenography of Spectrum in 2020, in which, like with Blaas and Curve, a white space is central.
About Schweigman&
Schweigman& is a Utrecht theater company under the artistic direction of Boukje Schweigman. Over the past 20 years, she has developed a unique working method within the performing arts. As a visitor, you enter wonderful worlds where a game with the senses is played. In performances, installations, and educational programs, Schweigman& places the body and the physical experience at the center - both of the performer and the audience. The working method of Schweigman& has produced an extensive body of work with a strong personal signature. Performances are held both domestically and internationally, and have been awarded several times.
About Machinefabriek
Machinefabriek is an alias of musician and sound artist Rutger Zuydervelt. His music combines elements of ambient, noise, minimalism, drone, field recordings, and electro-acoustic experiments. The music can be understood as an attempt to create sonic environments in which the listener can dwell. In addition to his own installation work, he has collaborated with numerous international musicians and filmmakers and has composed music for various dance performances.
The art program of Into The Great Wide Open is made possible in part by support from the Creative Industries Fund and The Reinforcement.
