Vlieland in Color
In early July, four different creatives met for the first time, combining their diverse cultural backgrounds, experiences, and the shared curiosity for a new place outside the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam. 'Kamp Guernica' was the working title, following the earlier camps of, among others, Yung Nnelg and S10. After an initial meeting with Claudy Jongstra and with shared skills in weaving and color extraction, they ventured into the 10,000-year-old dunes in search of color, inspired by the work Guernica de la Ecologica.
They dive into the history of colors – plant pigments were used as one of the first dyes – and how botanical color extraction is a lost form of knowledge. Vlieland in Color shows how you can connect with this ancient technology, and thus reconnect with nature and the biosphere. And how the 'maker activism' that plays such a big role in Claudy's work can be continued. How do you create something that raises awareness and reconnects us?
On the island, for example, they discovered a ‘sun stressed’ rapeseed plant all alone, at the bottom of the lighthouse, which creates a pigment that is incredibly close to the extensive and complex history of the color blue. But blue is not the only color on Vlieland; from millet to moss, to seaweed, honeysuckle, and beach roses - all unique in form, color, size, and pigment. The camp gave the creators the space to build on the skills they already had, but also to learn something new from each other and their environment. At the same time, they posed the question of what the meaning of colors is. What is the Dutch flag without the blue, and the flag of Vlieland without the green, which blue is also needed for? How do we use these colors? How do we connect with what a specific color means for the history of humanity in different cultures?
During Into The Great Wide Open, they present the result.
