Atelier Van Lieshout

Excrementus Megalomanus

“Throne, watchtower, podium, pot, cocoon, module, spaceship, mutating virus, living organism, arthropod, liberty, equality, fraternity, peace, pies, everything your heart desires, urinal, vomitorium, ejaculatory, excrementorium, toilet of toilets, compost to the people.”

Human waste systems and toilets have always been part of the oeuvre of Atelier Van Lieshout. They are functional sculptures that balance on the edge between art and utility, one of the boundaries that AVL plays with and resists. The compost toilet first appeared during AVL-Ville in 2001, the anarchistic and self-sufficient free state in the port of Rotterdam. A compost toilet is a very simple way to recycle any human excretion you can think of efficiently.

During your visit to Excrementus Megalomanus, elevate yourself above the festival noise. And while you display yourself, you become part of the recycling process.

About Atelier Van Lieshout
Atelier Van Lieshout is the studio founded by sculptor, painter, and visionary Joep van Lieshout. Since its founding in 1995, Van Lieshout has worked solely under this name, breaking the myth of the individual artistic genius with works that balance on the line between art and design. Over the past twenty years, Atelier Van Lieshout has produced a multitude of designs in the fields of art, design, and architecture. What these works have in common are several recurring themes: systems, power, autarky, life, and death. The individual human versus the greater whole. With this oeuvre, Atelier Van Lieshout has realized exhibitions and projects worldwide.
