Studio Claudy Jongstra & Studio Nienke Hoogvliet
Foraging Vlieland
Foraging Vlieland is a two-year research project focused on seaweed, dyes, and textile applications, which will kick off this summer in Vlieland. The project is a collaboration between Studio Claudy Jongstra and Studio Nienke Hoogvliet and is a design research trajectory into the possibilities of (textile) applications of seaweed and perennial plants on and around Vlieland. The knowledge and experience with the use of perennial plants in textile works by Claudy Jongstra is combined with the expertise of Nienke Hoogvliet with seaweed. During the festival, Jongstra and Hoogvliet will take walks with the festival audience around the island to collect materials. Various questions to the audience will be incorporated into the research trajectory. Additionally, you can listen to lectures about the work of both artists and explore samples of their first work with new materials.
About Studio Claudy Jongstra
Claudy Jongstra is an artist-textile designer and is known worldwide for her monumental works made of felted wool and silk, dyed with natural pigments. Characteristic is the use of wool that is traditionally felted and where the production chain is kept as much as possible in-house. The wool comes from her own herd of 200 Drenthe heath sheep in the Frisian Spannum, and a home garden has been established for the plant-based dyes.
About Studio Nienke Hoogvliet
Studio Nienke Hoogvliet is a design studio for experimental and conceptual material research. Nienke Hoogvliet studied Lifestyle & Design at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. During her studies, she developed a strong interest in the development of materials that can contribute to a more sustainable world. Nienke grew up near the beach, which has led to her fascination with the sea, seaweed, and fish skin. In her projects SEA ME and the SEA ME collection, she explores how seaweed can contribute to a more sustainable textile industry. These ongoing studies have found their preliminary expression in her book 'Seaweed Research'.
