Collectief from Bijlmer was always multidisciplinary, but now also dangerously disciplined.
SMIB has always been everything. Clothing brand, film production company, publishing house, record label, festival. And oh yes, also a hip-hop collective – with loose parts that did all sorts of other things themselves (Ray Fuego, Nnelg, GRGY, Loopey). For almost five years, no music appeared under the collective name, but now SMIB is back for a bit ‘and this is the golden age’. UNITY CREATES STRENGTH is the title of the latest record (according to the motto of the seafaring Republic and still that of hip-hop cradle Brooklyn) and as a unit, SMIB indeed makes more of an impression than ever. No loose productions and strung-together verses, but symbiosis: incredibly hard one-two-threes and pitch-black beats that keep blowing you away.
