Rogê
The sweltering peak days of samba-rock are revived in the California sun
If Arthur Verocai were not alive, Brazilian Rogê would undoubtedly have been his reincarnation. In reality, the 79-year-old Verocai – producer of Gal Costa and Jorge Ben Jor and also a particularly soulful samba artist in his own right – has assisted Rogê several times in the studio. The sound of the junior is thus a completely original, seamless continuation of what came before, full of fiery tropicália and lavishly arranged samba-canção. But like Verocai, Rogê looks beyond the borders of the continent. Residing in L.A., he also draws from spaghetti westerns, American funk, and even West Coast hip-hop on his albums Curyman and Curyman II. Here is a versatile, cunning standout performer, filled with what they call gringo in Rio. Perhaps the rebirth of Pelé.
