Establishing Eden
In Establishing Eden it’s all about the ‘establishing shot’: the moment a landscape is defined and a main character emerges. In blockbusters like Avatar and the Lord of the Rings films, these images have been used to capture and claim New Zealand as a new paradise; in this film, this Eden is presented as a series of flat images. One that creates a facade of reality; an illusion that can just as easily converge as it disintegrates.
