Komorebi
Under the name Komorebi Matteo Marangoni and Dieter Vandoren developed a swarm of artificial beings that create music in response to the sun, the clouds, and the shadows of trees moving in the wind.
Komorebi is a Japanese word that means "sunlight shining through trees." The beings together form an immersive sensory experience. The work suggests to us that "life" is not an exceptional property of organic life forms but also a property of complex systems that go beyond biological life as we understand it.
The first version of Komorebi was originally developed for Into The Great Wide Open 2020. Due to the unexpected extra year that Matteo and Dieter could work on the installation, the Komorebi’s underwent several intermediate forms, like a being that actually grows and develops. After the Komorebi Larva and the Komorebi Sensory Kit, in which they still acted as individuals, the Komorebi’s will finally be together this summer, a hundred at once, and communicate with each other after two years.
