Jozef van Wissem

The lute seldom sounded so... loud, folk music rarely felt so metal.

DATUM

Fri, August 29

Jozef van Wissem performs ex mortis – from the dead. The words are engraved on his lute, a string instrument that had almost disappeared for two centuries after the baroque period, but of which the Limburger is now one of the main ambassadors. He himself claims to have freed the lute from its medieval ballast. And so he often presents himself as a contemporary necromancer, as when he provided the legendary German vampire film Nosferatu with a chilling new soundtrack. In all his work – whether solo or together with director and musician Jim Jarmusch – that is the playing field: pitch-black primal magic in a cloak that is distinctly progressive.
