Joe Armon-Jones
London jazz visionary does live what laptops cannot
As a keyboardist of Ezra Collective, Joe Armon-Jones brought the groove back to British jazz, but solo he lets his fingers dance in a completely different terrain. Funk, dub, broken beat, house – he plays it all, and never as you expect. His latest album Archetype sounds like Sun Ra and Madlib dove into a London basement together and only came out once the smoke cleared. And live? Then Armon-Jones unleashes his demons. Everything can go wild, especially the band: a pack of free spirits that follow him to the edge of the stage, and then jump together. Forget your idea of jazz. This is a rave. With a Fender Rhodes.
