Skipping Steps

Skipping Steps investigates the concept of industrialization in art as an installation and musical instrument. By utilizing the unwanted effects of industrial techniques, Jesús Canuto Iglesias poses the following question with Skipping Steps: Can a mechanical component—as a symbol of progress—be artistically reused by focusing on its undesirable qualities? With this installation, he aims to achieve a higher level of industrialization, where the machine and its phenomena with resulting sound characteristics are not used to produce goods, but to create artistic material. Placing the installation in the context of Into the Great Wide Open creates a dislocating contrast with our society and presents the installation as a forgotten artifact. The sound sculptures seem to be remnants of a society that has taken over nature and are waiting to be reactivated.
