Helena Casella
The Solange from Ghent forges an international jazz sound with her soft voice
Helena Casella named her debut Pit of Impressions and indeed – with all the different impressions, a pit can be filled. You might almost suspect that you are dealing with a group of virtuosos from the London jazz scene, until suddenly an experimental piece of Chicago jazz can be heard (could the track 'Tortoise' be named for that?) and a moment later a smooth piece from L.A. (think Thundercat, Flying Lotus, The Internet). But no, Casella lives in Ghent, comes from Brazil, and studied in Amsterdam. Her languid neosoul is based on a global imaginative power – and an exceptionally skilled band that often builds an unmistakable groove from a place of calm.
