Pine Desire
For a long time, the scent of a summer pine forest was a mystery. You could smell the scent of the pine needles and the pine resin, but there was more; a warm pine forest at the end of a hot summer day has an exciting aroma that is hard to grasp. Until they could conduct research with an electronic nose: many wonderful scent substances were discovered that arise from the effect of UV light on the resin of the pine tree. These turn out to be mostly musky substances, known for their aphrodisiac effects for centuries.
In his latest work, Dennenlust, scent artist and perfumer Frank Bloem brings the warm pine forest to life. It is an ode to the planted and mature pine forest as it existed on the islands in the eighties, in contrast to the (now more common) mixed forest. He uses the imagery of the red dots with which rangers marked the trees that were to be cut down to create a more diverse mixed forest, but now the dots contain scents that together decompose this exciting Pine scent.
Especially for Into The Great Wide Open, Frank created a perfume, Dennenlust, based on these scents.
Dennenlust breathes the scent of a summer pine forest. You smell the powdery warmth, it makes breathing heavy, it tingles. Your sun-kissed skin releases equally wonderful fragrant substances. These are scents to which you unconsciously surrender. It stirs people in and around the pine forest to actions they would rather not speak of when they return home.
Frank Bloem studied at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. In 2014, he exchanged visual art for the medium of scent. Frank Bloem is a perfumer and scent designer. This resulted in the establishment of The Snifferoo in 2016. Last autumn, his book Scent, the Forgotten Sensation was published. Especially for Into the Great Wide Open, he combined the twelve scents from his installation into a perfume, which is available in limited edition at the festival.
