Hand-spun wool threads lead you to this installation and interactive performance on the beach, where Claudy Jongstra demonstrates her working process in five large pits: collecting, washing, dyeing, drying, and spinning. During the performance, local materials are used, including washing and dyeing the wool with saltwater or spring water, both available on the island. The method of creating new works is based on medieval recipes. Help with washing, dyeing, and spinning the wool and thus become part of the overall performance that symbolizes the connection between the artist, her audience, and the island.
About Claudy Jongstra
Artist Claudy Jongstra (1963) is known for her monumental artworks and architectural installations made of felted wool dyed with natural pigments. Her fame grew when her work was used in Star Wars. But her oeuvre encompasses much more. In addition to the monumental installations in many public buildings in the Netherlands and the USA, her artworks can be found in numerous private and museum collections such as the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and San Francisco, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. In Jongstra’s work, sustainability, biodiversity, ecology, research, and the preservation of ‘secret knowledge’ and the promotion of inclusivity and community are central. With her traveling installation, ‘Woven Skin’, she draws attention to these essential values for the preservation of humanity and the earth. In her professional practice, she actively seeks connections with science and business. In addition, Claudy Jongstra shapes transfer and education in her work, for example, with the Farm of the World foundation, near her home in Friesland.
