Claudy Jongstra

Guernica of Ecology

Claudy Jongstra has dedicated more than twenty years to creating artworks and social initiatives that promote the connections between communities, art, and nature. Her recent monumental artwork, titled Guernica de la Ecologia is an ode to Picasso’s famous painting Guernica from 1937 with the same dimensions (360X790cm) and black, white, and sepia color scheme. Claudy’s artwork conveys a similar urgent message while traveling around the world: it is a warning about the looming climate change, the loss of color in nature, and is a plea for more biodiversity, sustainable art, dignified craftsmanship, and healthy agriculture in an inclusive work environment.

The nomadic work is currently traveling through the Netherlands as a visual manifesto on a plant-based fuel Arriva bus and has arrived at the Nicolaaskerk in Oost-Vlieland, where it can be seen until 4 Into The Great Wide Open. The artwork is accompanied by a series of programs and workshops, in which Jongstra approaches local crafts that are on the verge of disappearing from a contemporary perspective. They are important components for shaping a more ecologically just future. From ITGWO, we organized ‘Kamp Guernica’ this summer, around maker activism with nature as a source of inspiration, featuring a number of special makers from Amsterdam-Zuidoost. In addition to Claudy’s tapestry, they will present Vlieland in Color during the festival.
