Children of the Light
Kijkend naar het grote wijd open
The artist duo Children of the Light has been working for some time to reduce their work to its essence, and in doing so, create spectacle. This resulted, for example, in works revolving around a single pixel.
For Into The Great Wide Open, they take it a step further by using only the light that is present on Vlieland. They design three 'inward-facing telescopes', an instrument that, instead of revealing distant objects, abstracts the immediate environment into pure light when you use it and makes you aware of your own presence and the place where you are, at that moment. With a simple open metal tube, a spectacle of circles, block, and zigzag patterns is created; fixed components of our visual language, out of nothing - from the sun. The result is an enchanting abstract kaleidoscopic image: a 'low tech' instrument that transforms the natural environment.
They have collaborated with Philip Glass, Darkside, Nicolas Jaar, Huerco S., and Alexander Whitley Dance Company, among others. In addition to their work in the art practice, they are guest lecturers at the Academy of Architecture and the Rietveld Academy.
About Children of the Light
Children of the Light is an artist duo, consisting of Christopher Gabriel and Arnout Hulskamp. Together they create physical and digital works where light is the primary medium and subject. The multimedia practice includes performance, video, sculptural, and immersive installations. The work of Children of the Light operates on a deep visceral and sensory level and often evokes a sense of wonder and transcendence. Besides exhibitions in various museums such as the Stedelijk Museum, the Oude Kerk, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, and the Nieuwe Instituut, they have been seen at festivals such as TodaysArt, Day for Night, STRP Biennale, and Wuzhen Triennale.
