movt no. 10: Normal Space
“A significant threat to the quality of the rule of law is that in our country, a person's skin color or name is still too often determining for their chances. That is unacceptable. The societal debate about this sometimes clashes, but it can also take us further in the fight against discrimination, racism, and unequal treatment. Bridging existing differences begins with the willingness to listen to one another.” (Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, Throne Speech, 2020)
With movt nr. 10: Normal Space Charl explores whether it is possible to create a space in which race and ethnicity, gender, class, sexuality, and social background do not influence how you perceive another. What is normal, what is culture, and who determines that?
Charl Landvreugd is an artist, researcher, and educator. He grew up in Rotterdam at a time when the Netherlands became home for various migrant communities. As part of this vibrant space, he advocates for local continental European concepts and language that arise from this environment and carry the potential to speak about sensitivities specific to the area. Using a wide range of artistic disciplines, he applies the results of his research to thinking about citizenship, belonging, and how this is expressed in, among other things, visual art. He has studied at Goldsmiths (BA, London), Columbia University (MA, New York), and the Royal College of Art (PhD, London).
