Atelier NL

SandGlass Factory

Atelier NL is a design studio from Eindhoven that transforms local materials into everyday objects that showcase the richness of the earth. By analyzing the hidden stories of the earth, Atelier NL has developed a unique research method in which local sand is converted into glass. Each glass object bears a stamp indicating the origin of the sand from which it is made.

In the ZandGlas Factory, you can see how the sand from Vlieland is transformed on site into glass. This happens in the mobile glass furnace that has been specially built for the festival and by a glassblower: glassblowing is an extraordinary and elegant process that requires a high level of physical endurance and mental concentration. Witness this process and observe how a set of dishes will emerge from the sand.

About Atelier NL
Since 2006, Nadine Sterk and Lonny van Ryswyck have been working together as the design studio Atelier NL. Central to their practice is the research into and analysis of the earth, and everything it produces. Atelier NL processes raw materials such as clay, sand, or litter into meaningful objects. On a deeper level, the work of Atelier NL calls for an extensive appreciation of local sourcing and production. Their research-based projects are intended to reveal and inspire while simultaneously opening the eyes of the general public and industry specialists.
