Angel-Rose Oedit Doebé
you were different before :$ wjnmk
In the past you were different :$ wjnmk memories, nostalgia, love, and trauma are central. In an installation as a metaphor for drowned memories, Angel-Rose Oedit Doebé tries to create space for all the drifting thoughts that sometimes overwhelm her, but she also particularly examines her (changing) position and identity: as an artist, as a woman of color in a Western society, and as a human.
Where Angel-Rose previously viewed the world through her self-proclaimed perspective the ‘Angel-Rose coloured glasses’ and expressed herself with a mix of satire, pop culture, and camp about socio-political issues, she seeks with you used to be different :$ wjnmk for a new balance of directness and abstraction in her message - and thus a new perspective to see the world and claim her place within it.
About Angel-Rose Oedit Doebé
Angel-Rose Oedit Doebé (1995, Amsterdam) describes herself as a visual artist rooted in the medium of photography. In 2021, she graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from the Utrecht School of the Arts.
Her work explores various media, including installations, photographs (mainly self-portraits), ready-made sculptural work, and working with archives. By combining activism, satire, camp, and pop culture, the artist reflects on marginalization within white Western society. Angel-Rose authentically claims space in a society that is not always made for her.
