Ana Oosting

Drifting in open water

We sail on it and swim in it, but what do we really know about the life that takes place in the sea? The work of Ana Oosting is inspired by what the water surface conceals: plankton. Plankton is everything that drifts in the pelagic zone, the open water of the ocean. This can be single-celled phytoplankton, the 'plants' of the ocean, or zooplankton such as krill or jellyfish. The sculptures of Ana Oosting are inspired by the movements of different types of plankton, spreading kaleidoscopic light reminiscent of bioluminescence:  Wonderfully beautiful, but actually a defense mechanism that they only display in times of extreme stress.

About Ana Oosting
Ana Oosting graduated from the Rietveld Academy in 2015 after a bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience at the University of Amsterdam and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in ArtScience in The Hague. She has a passion for ceramics, particularly porcelain, and traditional animation techniques. The freedom and movement of animation have influenced her imagery, and with the help of microcontrollers, her sculptures come to life. She uses both the beauty of porcelain and attention-grabbing movement as lures in her work to address challenging subjects in a playful way, often centering on our relationship with non-human organisms.
