Abandon Normal Devices: Ikbal Lubys and Tony Maryana in collaboration with Laurie Crombie
The Hive
A large sound box made of shaped gamelan plates with vibrating pipes, inspired by the sound of swarms of bees, forms this installation. In the world of Balinese gamelan, the combination of two plates, each tuned slightly differently, generates an acoustic pattern known as 'ombak': waves. This creates a flickering acoustic rhythm. Bring The Hive to life by touching, scratching, hitting, or shaking it in rhythmic patterns or through improvisation.
The Hive was created by artists Ikbal Lubys & Tony Maryana in collaboration with Laurie Crombie and Charlie Pethica – Electronics, commissioned and produced by Abandon Normal Devices (AND). The work was made possible with support from Arts Council England and British Council, Indonesia
