During Into The Great Wide Open 2025, we are not just building a festival. With the Building Site of the Future, the site transforms into a workshop for sustainable construction innovation. Together with partners from the construction and event sectors, we explore how it can be done differently: without emissions, using reusable or biobased materials and smarter logistics.

Where a regular construction site is often limited by rules and risks, a festival site offers space for experimentation. We utilize that freedom.

“Festivals are temporary mini-societies,” says Daan Stigter from Lab Vlieland. “We build everything from scratch. This forces you to make different choices. What we learn here is directly applicable to the rest of the Netherlands.”

The Construction Site of the Future is an initiative of Into The Great Wide Open and Lab Vlieland, supported by Stichting DOEN and in collaboration with BAM Infra Nederland and TBI. They use the festival as a testing ground for solutions that can also be applied at regular construction sites. The lessons are shared with other construction projects, festivals, and policymakers.
