So-called 'hybrid creatures' are created by fusing different animal elements into new figures. They cannot be placed in a single category; they exist somewhere in between. The completely white sculptures of Lenie van Asten evoke a sense of coherence while simultaneously creating a certain distance. They seem tangible and close, but they are part of a world that the spectator can never fully enter.
The hybrid creatures are playful and absurd, inviting us to temporarily let go of fixed ideas about animals and identity, and thus look at their (or our) world with an open mind.
About Lenie van Asten:
Lenie Van Asten (2004) is a sculptor from Kortrijk. In 2026, she graduated with a Master's degree in Fine Arts from KASK in Ghent. In her practice, she creates hybrid creatures in which different animal elements merge into new figures. Her work balances between humor, alienation, and wonder.
