Most Bahrainis were once pearl divers. You don't need to tell Yazz Ahmed that the oil industry destroys more than people care to admit. The trumpeter grew up during the Gulf War, went to school wearing a gas mask, and moved with her parents to London shortly after. There she became a jazz virtuoso who has increasingly immersed herself in pre-oil Arabic culture. Traditional 'pearl diving music' (fijiri) is a major source of inspiration, as is the Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh. From a bird's-eye view, Ahmed incorporates all that history into a remarkably contemporary-sounding blend of classical Arabic music, dub, and spiritual jazz.
