Wind, Waves & Weather - Dag & Nacht
Wind, Waves & Weather is a sound art project that approaches the wind as an active creator: an invisible presence that shapes the Wadden landscape and creates relationships between people, place, and environment. The wind cannot be captured or possessed; it moves between matter and meaning, between what is visible and what can only be experienced.
In this installation of large-scale wind harps on the beach, the wind itself acts as a composer, ensuring that no single sound or listening experience is ever the exact same. The installation is part of a broader artistic research into the diversity of the wind along the Wadden Sea.
Over the past few months, Ronald developed an auditory archive of place, time, and weather conditions, in which the wind is not only recorded, but also leaves its own traces. At two moments during ITGWO, he transforms (parts of) this archive into a live performance, in which winds from different locations and moments come together. Their voices merge into a slowly swelling 'Wind Drone': a composition without a fixed beginning or end.
About Ronald van der Meijs:
Ronald van der Meijs (Tilburg, 1966) is an Amsterdam-based artist known for his installations that combine nature, technology, and sound. In his work, he uses unpredictable natural processes to control mechanical systems, creating constantly changing sound compositions. These installations invite reflection on the relationship between humans, technology, and the environment.
Van der Meijs graduated cum laude from AKV|St. Joost and has exhibited internationally in Europe, Asia, and America. His work has been shown at the Centraal Museum Utrecht, the Triennial New Media Art in Beijing, and the Land Art Biennial in Mongolia, among others. He received the Haarlem Vishal Art Prize and was nominated for the Prix Ars Electronica and the Witteveen & Bos Art and Technology Prize. In addition to exhibitions, he realizes projects in public spaces, including a sculptural commission for Europol in The Hague.
The performance takes place on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 10:15 am at the IJsbaanhuisje. Registration for the performance is not required.
