Tidal Settlers - nacht
Tidal Settlers verbeeldt de omstandigheden van mensen die zich verplaatsen door onbestemde landschappen die niet alleen door natuurkrachten, maar ook door politieke keuzes zijn gevormd. De grond onder hun voeten is tijdelijk, de horizon onduidelijk en beweging zelf wordt een vorm van (over)leven.
In vijf filmprojecties ontvouwt zich een tocht door water, zand en modder. In een fragiel evenwicht met de natuur navigeren de hoofdpersonen door een vijandige omgeving die hen structureel onveilig maakt. De beelden dragen sporen van klimaatverandering, de stijgende zeespiegel en ontheemding, en tonen migratie als de meest urgente consequentie daarvan.
About the makers:
In his images and stories, Juul Hondius balances between documentation and construction. Photography and film become means for suggestion, staging, and controlled ambiguity. What appears to be news images or historic archival material is usually directed. Not to mislead, but to create awareness about how visual language steers our beliefs, feelings, and thoughts.
His characters move in an environment where the authentic and the staged constantly alternate. Because of this, the images do not instantly reveal their meaning, evoking a range of emotions in the viewer.
For this work, he collaborated closely with Montaser Alsabe and Abed Hussein, who were key creative partners during the development. Montaser and Abed previously worked as filmmakers and directors of the Red Carpet Human Rights Film Festival in Gaza: a festival where film was central to promoting social justice and human rights awareness.
