SUPERDRUM - Day & Night
SUPERDRUM consists of one hundred second-hand drums, donated by the public or sourced from online marketplaces and thrift stores. Not a single drum is the same; each drum carries its own history in dents, discolourations and old band logos.
Touki Delphine built a self-playing drum machine from this collection, played by twigs from the forest via solenoids, a mechanism also used in car doors. Each drum is equipped with light and can be controlled individually.
With SUPERDRUM Touki Delphine harks back to the ancient power of rhythm as a means of communication. Specially for the installation, they composed new music, written for the possibilities and limitations of the machine. The result is a raw, pounding landscape of rhythm, mechanics and light.
About Touki Delphine:
Amsterdam-based Touki Delphine is a pioneering artist collective of musicians, performers, and visual artists. Both domestically and internationally, they are making waves with monumental light and music installations built from recycled materials: taillights in FIREBIRD, indicator relays in RELAY, cabling in TRANSMISSION, and windshield washer fluid reservoirs and their pump motors in DRIFTING. Their latest work, SUPERDRUM, is built from second-hand drums, twigs, and solenoids: a car door locking mechanism. With their work, they create poetic encounters between humans and machines. Inspired by the climate crisis and the idea of nature as a living whole, they investigate how technology can not only alienate, but also connect.
