New York-based independent investigative journalist Amy Goodman (1957) has been reporting for decades from conflict zones worldwide: from East Timor, Morocco, Nigeria, and Gaza to just around the corner during 9/11 and the Iraq War. Daily, she and a small group of colleagues present the online TV and radio news program Democracy Now!, which has existed since 1996 without state funding, thanks to contributions from news consumers, donors, and foundations.

Her motto is ‘steal this story’: steal this story to share it with the world – which only proves more urgent now that US President Donald Trump has declared the press an enemy of the people. With admirable perseverance, she personally embodies the watchdog of democracy in the increasingly rare role of investigative journalist.

In addition to her life story, this film depicts a disturbing history of the commercialization of media and attacks on the free press in the US.
