Sophie Straat
There is not much to celebrate in the world, but here is the proof that a protest can also be a party.
Voting is meaningful. With the help of the Dolle Mina's – reborn out of necessity in 2025 – 'Vrijheid, Gelijkheid, Zusterschap' by Sophie Straat landed at number 713 in the Top 2000, after the song had earlier been embroiled in a streaming battle with an unnamed, far-right AI song. But resistance against rising fascism requires more. Thankfully, the Amsterdam-based Straat, besides the tearjerkers with which she made her name, now has enough in her arsenal to help us along the way. A song like 'Let me tell you something 'bout my country' is a great conversation starter: what kind of country are we? What kind of country do we want to be? And if that conversation doesn’t get started? Then it’s still nice to have a rave in the accompanying punk basket.
