Ryan Davis & the Roadhouse Band

A polysyllabic country dream for anyone who likes drinking pilsner, watching college football, and surprisingly often thinking about the Roman Empire

Feel free to call Ryan Davis the alt-country Joanna Newsom. With long digressions and existential pondering, he sings about NFL quarterbacks, rusty Chevys and peeing contests, but also about Dionysus, gymnopédies and Emperor Constantine. Gifted songwriter David Berman (Silver Jews) once called Davis “the best lyricist who’s not a rapper going.” But above all, don’t let all that verbal firepower distract you from the Roadhouse Band, with whom Davis has been playing since 2023 as if they were being chased through all of Jeffersonville, Indiana. On the honky-tonk epic ‘Monte Carlo/No Limits,’ the band even pulls out a spicy bit of breakbeat. Purring, they move through a kaleidoscopic Middle America that almost no one can sketch better or stranger.
