Feel free to call Ryan Davis the alt-country Joanna Newsom. With long wanderings and existential pondering, he sings about NFL quarterbacks, rusty Chevys, and pissing contests, but also about Dionysus, gymnopedies, and Emperor Constantine. Gifted songwriter David Berman (Silver Jews) once called Davis “the best lyricist who’s not a rapper going.” But don't let all that wordy violence distract you from the Roadhouse Band, with whom Davis has been playing since 2023 as if they are being chased through all of Jeffersonville, Indiana. On the honky-tonk epic ‘Monte Carlo/No Limits’, the band even pulls off a spicy bit of breakbeat. Chugging along, they move through a kaleidoscopic Middle America that virtually no one can sketch better and stranger.
