Nusantara Beat

Groove gurus build glittering bridges over the Karimata Strait and the Java Sea.

To replace the overcrowded and slowly sinking Jakarta, Indonesia is now building a sustainable, futuristic new capital city on Borneo, named Nusantara, a name meant to embody the entire archipelago. The band Nusantara Beat (with super-virtuoso members of EUT, Altin Gün, Jungle By Night, and POM) may 'simply' come from Amsterdam, but through their roots, the members feel deeply connected to Indonesia: the landscape, folklore, and, of course, the music. And just like Nusantara, the city, they translate a wealth of deep-rooted traditions – gamelan, keroncong, but also psychedelic rock – into what is hopefully a glorious, tropical future. It is already bubbling like no other.
