MONOPOLY - Day & Night
On the beach stands a light green cottage. At first glance it looks like a classic Monopoly house, but in reality it is a green replica of the cabin of the Unabomber, the terrorist who for decades sent explosives to protagonists of the technology culture. The color is also different, a lighter shade of green: chroma key color (RAL 6038 / #00b140), i.e. the color used for green screen recordings. Where the board game reduces living to exchange value, this color choice allows for any visual interpretation. Is the facade actually a green screen background where the final video material is yet to be edited in? And why is it located on the Vliehors, the only military training ground in Europe where NATO fighter jets train with live bombs?
MONOPOLY is a sharp visual essay about technocultural power, militarization of the landscape and the friction between economy, representation and living environment.
About Dani Ploeger
Dani Ploeger explores conflict and crisis situations at the margins of high-tech consumer culture. His work encompasses a wide range of forms: from digital media, installations, and film, to performance, anarchist technology, and anthropological fieldwork. It is shown at museums, biennials, and festivals such as ZKM Karlsruhe, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Venice Architecture Biennale, London Film Festival, Nairobi National Museum, and the Ethnographic Museum in Lviv. He certainly does not go unnoticed. For instance, his work on the Rojava Center for Democratic Technologies in North-East Syria received a Prix Ars Electronica Honorary Mention and was nominated for the S+T+ARTS Prize – the European Commission's prize for science, technology, and art.
Dani holds a PhD from the University of Sussex and has been, among other things, Professor of Performance and Technology at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München. Currently, he is the artistic director of Fabricatie, a platform for artistic research into industrialization and industrial culture in Zeeland, and is a Fellow at V2_Lab for the Unstable Media in Rotterdam.
