Madra Salach
Class struggle and drunkenness go – of course – hand in hand in the raw, modern-traditional arsenal of these Irish.
Irish music is thriving – and although a folk group like Madra Salach may seem to have little in common with Kneecap at first glance, there is at least one common thread among many recent Irish success stories (including Lankum and The Mary Wallopers): the return to their own language, mythology, history, and musical traditions is anything but conservative. On the contrary, it is distinctly radical and uncompromisingly supportive. There is immense power in the ballads that Dublin's Madra Salach gradually builds up with both acoustic and electronic drone sounds – it makes your ears tingle and straightens your back. Contemporary lyrics and traditional songs go together effortlessly.
