Kaya

Solo, Sarah Julia guitarist swaps fairytale folk for black magic

Kaya's first string instrument was a harp. It explains the urgency with which she now plucks at her guitar. Although her solo work is not miles removed from the ethereal folk of Sarah Julia – in whose band she has been playing for years – there is noticeably more storm in the air here. Screaming is closer to her than crying. In terms of quiet intensity, Kaya is reminiscent of Adrianne Lenker and Elliott Smith. The fact that the scream (usually) does not come does not mean you do not feel it in your toes.
