Horsegirl

Playful trio from Chicago runs the early days of indie rock through a bright red pencil sharpener

The members of Horsegirl, all three in their early twenties, have rock history at their feet. With Versions of Modern Performance (2022) it felt as if a long-lost classic from the noise rock scene around Sonic Youth had emerged. Follow-up Phonetics On and On (2025) was reminiscent of Sarah Records, where back in '91 all the cool indie pop bands could be found. Wonderfully enough, there is nothing about Horsegirl that reeks of pastiche. Their stuttering and bouncing songs are far too effortless for that. Really, they weren't born too late, because every generation can use a band that shows how incredibly fun it is to be in a band.
