Horsegirl

Playful trio from Chicago runs the early days of indie rock through a bright red pencil sharpener

The members of Horsegirl, all three in their early twenties, have rock history at their feet. With Versions of Modern Performance (2022), it seemed as if a long-lost classic from the noiserock scene around Sonic Youth had surfaced. Its follow-up, Phonetics On and On (2025), brought to mind Sarah Records, where back in '91 all the fun twee-pop bands could be found. Remarkably, there is nothing about Horsegirl that reeks of pastiche. Their stuttering and bouncing songs are far too effortless for that. Truly, they were not born too late, because every generation can use a band that shows how incredibly fun it is to be in a band.
