Frans Kalf

Big feelings wrapped in small words

Dutch-Belgian Frans Kalf presents himself as a cynical cheerful fellow – or a cheerful cynic, depending on his mood. As a Dutch-Belgian, he tends toward chanson, a genre in which all words have already been sung a hundred thousand times, but you can always arrange them in a different order. The strength lies in the simplicity and Kalf's soft cadence, which lends itself perfectly to small songs, understated humor, and everyday wisdom. He needs little more than some lighthearted strumming to make his poetry take flight. In this way, Kalf reveals himself as a Brel for the introvert.
