Playing Early Music, i.e. music from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque, is in a sense a very modern affair. For the Castello Consort, it requires research and customization that would have been impossible in the intervening centuries. They previously had a 17th-century Italian organ reconstructed and now play a virginal, the original harpsichord, made after a 16th-century model. This makes the performances of forgotten, early Baroque works such as those by Girolamo Frescobaldi sound all the more lively – and allows them to be even better equipped to sometimes put a more contemporary (and headstrong) spin on the past.
