Brìghde Chaimbeul

With dive flights and roaming trips, Chaimbeul knows how to get more from a bagpipe than you thought possible.

The nest of Brìghde Chaimbeul looks out over the rugged mountain landscapes of Rùm and Skye and the turbulent water in between. Her older sisters are harpists; her mother is a sculptor; and her father is an author of Scottish-Gaelic magical realism. Then you get a little sense of what the bagpiper is competing with – and just as much where she draws her inspiration from. Her music is undeniably Scottish, but Chaimbeul also likes to fly further from home. Gaelic folklore turns out to blend excellently with the blowing techniques of Cape Breton Island, Kabardino-Balkaria, and Bulgaria. All of the above (and more) she absorbs in an eagle's flight – what she interprets is a truly unique amalgam.
