The starting point of this hypnotic essay film is the Encyclopedia Africana, initiated in 1909 by W.E.B. DuBois, who wanted to unlock Black culture for a new generation. In this pulsating debut film, Kahlil Joseph – who previously collaborated with Kendrick Lamar and Beyoncé – leaps from the present to the past and future. With a lightning-fast montage of a fictional Afro-futurism story, memes, TikTok clips, music, and videos, Kahlil forges an energetic and ideas-rich work of art, rhythmically composed like a music album, and inspired by his personal family history.
