Anatomy of Belonging - Dag
Anatomy of Belonging ontstond na een nieuwsbericht over een boer in Gaza wiens olijfbomen niet konden groeien omdat hun wortels geen houvast konden vinden op een eeuwenoud Byzantijns mozaïek onder de grond. In de nasleep van de verwoestingen in Gaza is het mozaïek een metafoor geworden voor de kwetsbare verwevenheid van land, herinnering en uitwissing.
Het project verhoudt zich tot het aangelegde landschap in Nederland door de aandacht te verleggen van wat boven de grond zichtbaar is naar de verborgen systemen eronder. Wortelstructuren en schimmelnetwerken worden metaforen voor een bestaan in de diaspora: levensvormen die zich aanpassen, verbindingen aangaan en overleven, terwijl ze altijd gevormd blijven door hun oorsprong. De olijfboom is hier een ontheemde aanwezigheid die probeert wortel te schieten in onbekende grond.

Suat Öğüt (b. 1986, Diyarbakır, Turkey) is an artist and filmmaker based in Amsterdam and Istanbul. In his interdisciplinary practice, he explores how recent history shapes the present through personal and collective narratives. He works with installations, sculpture, video, and participatory projects, in which he uses monuments, archives, and everyday structures to challenge dominant historical narratives. Through this, he reinterprets heritage as a living, culturally anchored process. Öğüt studied at Marmara University in Istanbul in 2007 and completed a postgraduate program at HISK in Ghent in 2013.
Anatomy of Belonging was created in collaboration with Syrian mosaic artist Abdurrahman Hamid, who uses traditional techniques and natural stone to incorporate layered histories into the form.
