A climate-positive festival requires an emission-free energy system for the entire event. For this, all power needed for all locations must be entirely emission-free. No climate emissions (only power from Dutch sun and wind) and no local emissions (nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, or particulate matter). 

In 2023, ITGWO tried to take this huge step toward an emission-free energy system for all its festival locations. It succeeded in running 85% on solar power from Vlieland. However, for the final 15%, generators still had to run on HVO. In 2024, ITGWO aimed for 100% again but ultimately finished at 95%. Third time's a charm, so this year ITGWO is going for 100% solar power from Vlieland and Dutch wind power in the form of hydrogen.

To achieve this, ITGWO is undertaking the following in 2026:

1. Replacement of the old transformer, allowing the voltage and capacity of the Flidunen connection to increase; as a result, mobile batteries are no longer needed.

2. LED lighting across all sites.

3. Self-sufficient, efficient, and emission-free refrigerated container in a pilot with Innofest.

4. Cooking on hydrogen instead of fossil gas, also as a pilot with Innofest.

5. Extra power meters from Event Engineers, which will improve the kWh billing for caterers and the general power overview.

6. Moving to 100% solar power from Vlieland, and Dutch wind power (via hydrogen). To achieve this, multiple grid connections are required: the Flidunen connection (converted and transformer renewed and enlarged), the Jutter connection (modified), and the connections at Stortemelk.
   
   The following power solutions have been chosen per festival location, co-funded by the Transition Fund (TF):

   • Sportveld: smart grid system based on the renewed Flidunen connection and a large Greener battery

   • Open plek: deployment of a hydrogen generator from Watermeln

   • At the IJsbaan: use of the converted Jutter connection via a 300-meter cable with a small buffer battery from F&L.
