A climate-positive festival requires a zero-emission energy system for the entire event. All the electricity needed for all locations must be completely emission-free. No climate emissions (only power from Dutch sun and wind) and no local emissions (nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, or fine dust). 

In 2023, ITGWO attempted to take this huge step towards a zero-emission energy system for all its festival locations. It was successful in running 85% on Vlieland solar power. However, the last 15% still had to rely on generators running on HVO. In 2024, ITGWO aimed for 100% but ultimately ended up at 95%. Three times is a charm, so this year ITGWO is going for 100% Vlieland solar power and Dutch wind energy in the form of hydrogen.

To achieve this, ITGWO will undertake the following in 2025:

1. Replacement of the old transformer, which will increase the voltage and capacity of the Flidunen connection; this means mobile batteries will no longer be needed.

2. LED lighting on all grounds.

3. Self-sufficient, efficient, and emission-free cooling container in a pilot with Innofest.

4. Cooking with hydrogen instead of fossil gas, also as a pilot with Innofest.

5. Extra power meters from Event Engineers, which can improve the kWh billing of the caterers and the overall power view.

6. Moving towards 100% Vlieland solar power and Dutch wind power (via hydrogen). To achieve this, multiple grid connections are necessary: the Flidunen connection (refurbished and transformer renewed and enlarged), the Jutter connection (modified), and the connections at Stortemelk.
   
   For each festival location, the following power solutions have been chosen, partly financed by the Transition Fund (TF):

   • Sports field: smart grid system based on the renewed Flidunen connection and large Greener battery

   • Open area: deployment of a hydrogen generator from Watermeln

   • At the Ice Rink: use of the modified Jutter connection via a 300-meter long cable with a small buffer battery from F&L.
