The Camp of Yung Nnelg
Glenn Ascencion aka Yung Nnelg was born and raised in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. Into The Great Wide Open asked him to bring his creative world to Vlieland and work on new music. The period he spent on the island in the summer of 2021 was documented in a film.
At the invitation of the festival, Yung Nnelg – who impressed at the Open Plek in 2019 – traveled to Vlieland to work with a group of guest musicians on his new album.
The young Ghanaian rapper found his place in the rapper collective SMIB, the skating hip-hop funk army from Bijlmer that represented a new generation of rappers reminiscent of Wu-Tang alongside comrades like Ray Fuego. Later inspired by the artistic elite of Amsterdam, Yung Nnelg developed into a major rapper with his countercultural beats and unexpected rock vibes, sometimes bordering on Frank Ocean's style.
The Camp of Yung Nnelg was the fifth in a series of maker camps that Into The Great Wide Open launched in 2019 to provide young creators a platform even within the restrictions of the corona pandemic. The Industry, S10, Sarah Neutkens and SLAA had already paved the way for Yung Nnelg. The documentary about The Camp of Yung Nnelg is presented in collaboration with NTR.
