Does art change the world, or does the world change art?
In conversation with artists from various disciplines who have worked on Vlieland in recent years, journalist Leendert van der Valk dives into an age-old question: does art change the world or does the world change art?
Inspired by TRANSFORM/TRANSIT, which would be the festival theme in 2021, Van der Valk engages in conversation with artists from the regions of Into The Great Wide Open. How has the island influenced their work? What does their Vlieland sound like?
Episode 1: This is what Marjolijn Boterenbrood's island sounds like.
In this episode, you listen to the Vlieland of artist in residence Marjolijn Boterenbrood. What does she hear as a visual artist? Her work always revolves around a place and is largely created by the place itself. Is it the wind and the mudflat that create the art here, or is it actually Marjolijn?
Episode 2: This is what Sarah Neutkens' island sounds like.
In the second episode: composer Sarah Neutkens. She came to the island at the end of 2020 at the invitation of Into The Great Wide Open to create new music together with special guests. How did winters in Vlieland influence her compositions? And what is it like to immerse yourself in music for a whole week? "I had a bit of the idea about Vlieland: it’s cold. Nasty northerners, distant. That wasn’t the case at all of course, those are all stereotypes. But still, such a winter island has something of abandonment and loneliness."
Episode 3: This is what Joost Oomen's island sounds like
In this episode, you will listen to the Vlieland of writer and performer Joost Oomen. In 2017, he was at the festival as Lost Poet and captured the island in words. The rhythmic poetry with which he introduced bands can be heard here. Joost debuted last year as a novelist with the wonderful book The Pear Song. Episode 4: This is what Roosje Klap's island sounds like
In this episode, you will listen to the Vlieland of graphic designer Roosje Klap. Together with Loes Claessens, she creates all the graphic design for Into The Great Wide Open, from Facebook profiles to T-shirts and signage.
