Het Punkkamp
In June 2024, eight punk bands from the Low Countries came to Vlieland, at the invitation of Into The Great Wide Open. De Bolder was converted into a studio where the bands each recorded one song. Bundled together, these tracks form an incomplete overview of the thriving punk scene in the Netherlands and surrounding areas. Some are funny, others grim, but all of them are solid evidence of the same message: PUNK'S NOT DEAD!
Punk is back. The compilation album Uitholling Bovenlangs presents one Belgian punk band and seven Dutch bands, providing an incomplete overview of the thriving punk scene in the Low Countries. A sharp and diverse selection from the total offering – it ranges from quirky to crazy, from grim to funny. A LP at 45 RPM because 33 is too slow for the racing minds of these punks. The record was released on Plato Records and is for sale.
Punk is back! Good back, because suddenly thick in the punk bands. And it’s not the punks of yore who are tackling it with renewed energy. It’s young people, mostly under twenty, plagued by lockdowns and burdened with a vision of the future shrouded in smog, but with new energy. Young people who are not hindered by knowledge and skill of the musician profession. Just start and see what comes of it. Stepping onto the ice unprepared. Go!
Punk is not dead, never has been! For ages it has been lurking, waiting for the right moment. Compare it to the underground, creeping rootstock of the nettle, which, as an undervalued weed, can make anyone’s skin scream. If the conditions are favorable, the nettle shoots up from the barren ground in clusters. The nettle thrives well in a nitrogen-rich environment. Could that be the reason for the current punk boom? A thorny issue. An issue that doesn’t necessarily make the current generation of punks political animals, although the album title can indeed be politically interpreted. An erosion occurs when material is removed from an object. Money among the underprivileged or opportunities among the youth. Such a thing is called an undercurrent erosion. An upper erosion requires a Robin Hood mentality: ‘Steal from the rich, give to the poor’. The Utrecht-based No Brains refutes that mentality; they wish for a Private Jet. They are right, flying swiftly from A to B, avoiding traffic in the air. Flight shame makes one obedient. Achterlicht from Haarlem turns Pisse (to urinate) into a wildly psychedelic experience. Apeshit from Utrecht snaps in its grooviest way in your face that fate is not kind to them, and the Hilversum-based Clitteband douses their elementary school experiences with the vibe of Brecht's Threepenny Opera in a contemporary punk light. Eyesores (Harderwijk) pounds with Alienated acupuncture needles into your alienated body. The last drop of adrenaline in your blood you pour out to the Groningen-based Frontsector, whose Death Bell will prove to be a blessing. Once we were all sweet children; the Ghent-based Maria Iskariot raises question marks at that folk wisdom like a souped-up two-stroke moped and The Covids from Amsterdam play themselves with fresh amazement over the past on a path to a golden future.
