The Camp of Sarah Neutkens
Composer, pianist, and artist Sarah Neutkens traveled to Vlieland in the autumn of 2020 to work on new music. At the invitation of Into The Great Wide Open, the emerging self-taught artist joined forces with a number of musical guests.
Sarah Neutkens (1998) is an unconventional talent in modern composed music, someone who draws inspiration just as easily from Bach and Brahms as from R.E.M. and Nick Cave. She deliberately did not pursue a conservatory education but has made a name for herself in the Dutch music scene on her own terms over the past few years. She debuted in 2016 with the EP Hexagon and followed that release in 2018 with Cumulus, which was released on her own label Neutra Records. Last year, Neutkens, in collaboration with The Dutch String Collective, released Pieces For Strings and this year she teamed up with the Dutch Saxophone Octet for September.
Neutkens is a self-made artist who takes matters into her own hands. She does her own bookings, has direct contact with the press, and creates her own artwork – together with her father, artist and baroque musician Harjo Neutkens. In addition, she works as an independent model and visual artist.
The Camp
For a week, Neutkens created new music on the island, together with special guests Kika Sprangers, Berend Dubbe, Hampus Lindwall, and members of the Nederlands Kamerkoor.
The Camp of Sarah Neutkens began in early December in the early hours at Harlingen Haven. From there, Sarah sailed with the sailing ship De Albatros to Vlieland. She did this in the company of 26-year-old saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Kika Sprangers. After a harsh journey, the duo worked at Brouwerij Fortuna on two melancholic and minimalistic pieces, in which Sprangers' saxophone sometimes sounds like the sea:
In the Nicolaas Church, the seventeenth-century church in the Vlieland Dorpsstraat, Sarah collaborated with the Swedish, Paris-based organist Hampus Lindwall and drummer, producer, and vocal artist Berend Dubbe, known from Bettie Serveert, among others. With the help of the organ, dating from around 1780, the trio created a captivating adaptation of In Dreams Begin Responsibilities, a short story by American writer Delmore Schwartz. The piece by Sarah, Hampus, and Berend is called My Father Thinks of My Mother.
