The Camp at the Schans

Thirteen writers, musicians, and artists on one island

In the spring of 2021, the Stichting Literaire Activiteiten Amsterdam (SLAA) visited Vlieland. At the invitation of Into The Great Wide Open, a thirteen-member collective wandered around the island for a week.

Under the name Op de Schans, writer Alma Mathijsen, style icon Bonne Reijn, and SLAA invited six writers, four musicians, and two artists. For one week, they roamed the island in search of the perfect find. They found reindeer moss, an F-16, the champion of European chainsawing, an illegal pet cemetery, and a shell.

The group collected stories from Vlieland and translated them into their own art forms. The resulting literature, music, and visual arts came together in a four-part audio series that goes in all directions yet forms a cohesive whole. A thirteen-headed Frankenstein to listen to.
