The Youth
The Youth interrogates Néomi, Noor, and Pitou
In Between Tunes and Trappers, De Jeugd – the group of 15 to 18-year-olds who think along about the ITGWO program – interviews artists at the festival in their cargo bikes. They take artists to beautiful spots on Vlieland to briefly escape the hustle and bustle and to learn more about the guests. They filmed videos with Pitou and Noor, and wrote down their thoughts for a conversation with néomi. All three can be watched and read below.
And they got into writing for a Q&A session with singers néomi:
Who or what inspired you to make music?
“When I was 5, I had to take piano lessons from my mother, which I did for 5 years.
Then when I was 11 or 13, I saw a video of Ben Howard on YouTube and thought it was so
incredibly cool that I thought, hey, I want to do that too, so I took my sister's guitar and started writing songs.”
What advice would you give to your sixteen-year-old self?
“Go to therapy a bit earlier because it can’t hurt if you're feeling down & take yourself
and life a little less seriously, because it will always turn out okay.”
Into The Great Wide Open is also partly about sustainability, but what do you do in your daily life to be a bit kinder to the climate?
“I want to lie now and say that I'm really good at that, but actually I'm
not very good at it at all. I try to fly as little as possible, so if I can, I take the train or drive. And I don't eat meat because the bio-industry is also really messed up, I also eat a lot vegan!”
What did you listen to when you were 16?
“When I was 16, I had just started at MBO-music, so I was really into Ben
Howard, Bon Iver, James Vincent McMorrow. And I also listened a lot to Jack Garratt, but that love has kind of faded now.”
What do you enjoy doing when you're not working on music?
“Then I'm walking my dog, maybe I'm grooming a few horses, and I'm exercising and enjoying my food.”
How do you relax between your shows?
"Actually, I do that by really reading a good book or just enjoying a nice walk in the woods with my little dog, those are really, I think, key points! Yoga, meditating, those are definitely things I find important."
Dream place to perform one day?
“Well, Into The Great Wide Open was truly a dream, we've just fulfilled that! And I would really love to perform at Glastonbury, that's really the dream from here!”
How is the festival going?
“The festival is wonderful! I find it really fantastic that it's set so beautifully in nature, it's nice
to swim each morning with the band, maybe one of my favorites so far
!”
