The Day Parts (2021)
A fever dream of thirteen musicians and writers
Under the name Op de Schans, writer Alma Mathijsen, style icon Bonne Reijn, and Stichting Literaire Activiteiten Amsterdam (SLAA) invited six writers, four musicians, and two artists for a stay on Vlieland. The group collected stories from the island and translated them into their own art forms. The resulting literature, music, and visual art come together in an audio series that goes in all directions yet forms a cohesive whole.
Thirteen writers and musicians traveled to the Wadden island in April 2021. For a week, they let themselves be carried away by the rhythm of the day, starting from the Vlieland night, morning, afternoon, and evening. The result is The Day Parts: a four-part audio series that feels like a collection of poems. Writers have conversations with the sea, arrive, depart, and long to touch the end of the island. Musicians translate the sounds of the Vlieland day parts into a new story.
The following people contributed to this project: Kim David Bots, Kees Koenders, Boris de Klerk, Maarten van der Kamp, Munganyende Hélène Christelle, Thomas Verbogt, Lisette Ma Neza, Maartje Wortel, Gijsje Heemskerk, Lyckle de Jong, Carel Alphenaar, Alma Mathijsen, and Bonne Reijn.
Night
Everything starts in the dark, just like the stories in this episode. We step onto a boat and ultimately, we will wonder if regret is the same as revenge.
Morning
The peeping and rattling of the morning. Some will suffer from heightened alertness, to bounce back from that we conclude with a butterfly song.
Afternoon
The afternoon is not for everyone. An uncomfortable bridge between the morning and the evening. A good time to ask ourselves how we prefer to experience water.
Evening
The evening softly speaks to us, tucks us in bed. If we are very lucky, we might get a sermon.
